Eine Dinnerparty wird zum Höllentrip – unausweichlich und grausam, aber niemand weiß genau, warum: Dieses Szenario verwandelte der Regisseur Luis Buñuel in den 1962 erschienenen Film El ángel exterminador (Der Würgeengel oder auch Der Engel der Vernichtung). Seit einigen Jahren steht es als The Exterminating Angel auf der Werkliste des englischen Komponisten Thomas Adès. Als Auftragswerk von gleich vier internationalen Opernhäusern erlebte die Oper Triumphe an mehreren Schauplätzen. Im Juli 2016 in Salzburg uraufgeführt, kam sie im Jahr darauf nach New York an die Metropolitan Opera. Nun erscheint der dort entstandene Livemitschnitt als DVD und Blu-ray. Nach Powder Her Face und The Tempest ist The Exterminating Angel das dritte Opernwerk des vielseitigen englischen Komponisten – und wahrscheinlich das radikalste. In einem wahren Fanal des Surrealismus und extrem vielseitiger polystilistischer Musik folgt Adès, der sein Werk auch selbst dirigiert, dem Bühnengeschehen aus dem legendären Film: Eine höhere Gesellschaft, bestehend aus einem Ensemble aus 15 Partien, kann plötzlich den Salon, Schauplatz einer Dinnerparty, nicht mehr verlassen. Ohne erkennbaren äußeren Grund müssen die Angehörigen höherer Kreise unter sich bleiben, während die Bediensteten vor der unbekannten Gefahr bereits Reißaus genommen haben. Die seltsame Gefangenschaft entfaltet alle Konsequenzen: Aggression, Hunger, Zerstörung, sogar Menschenopfer – das ganze musikalisch angeheizt durch Musik verschiedenster ironisch gebrochener Bedeutungsebenen vom Militärmarsch bis zur sinfonischen Romantik, vom Walzer bis zum Klavierstück. -
