He was a member of the LSU team that won the 1991 College World Series. He was voted to the 1991 CWS All-Tournament Team and was named the 1991 CWS Most Outstanding Player. After his college baseball career, he played from 1991-1995 for various Minor League teams. Prior to playing professionally, he attended Belaire High School. He was drafted twice - the first time by the Kansas City Royals in the 68th round of the 1987 amateur draft. The second time, he was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 14th round of the 1991 amateur draft.
